Photos: Fort Canning Park

I have always wanted to do this and so I went to Fort Canning Park with xinyun, her friend and chillycraps last Saturday [07.03.2009].

I personally hasn’t gone on Fort Canning for a long time – probably for 2 decades at least since the last time I went up there I was still in secondary school.

Anyway, we had coffee at the Dome in Park Mall for probably 1 ~ 1.5hrs as it was raining heavily. Even though we have umbrellas, we stayed put there for our own safety as there were lots of lightning and thunder throughout, not to mention that it might be slippery on the tracks.

When the rain subsided, we took a quick walk around and took as many pictures as we could, just in case the rain would return. Here are some of the photos we took. And thanks to the rain, it was a cooling and refreshing walk. I believe if time allowed we would be planning for another walk, this time at either the Botanic Gardens or the treetop walk around Mt Faber.

River HongBao 2009

Went down to River Hongbao on the first day of the Chinese [Lunar] New Year. Met my friend Xander at UOB Plaza to have dinner at Burger King before we took a slow walk down along Battery Road, down the Fullerton Bridge and past the Esplanade. Admission is free and there was a huge crowd.

This year’s River HongBao is held the floating platform in Marina Bay. It’s the first time I’ve been there even though 2 National Day Parades have been held there. I must say they should do something about the entrance even though I understand they want to control the flow of people into the platform, but it is like just 10 – 15% in width compared to the exit and the movement is so slow you end up sweaty (even when the nights are pretty cool lately) by the time you get in.

The lighted displays are nice, consisting of the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac, a ‘Terra Cotta’ chess set, a large statue of the ‘god of wealth and prosperity’ and even a wishing well. There are also other displays which I have sort of forgotten but you can see them in the slide show below. I saw a number of people setting up their cameras with stands along the Esplanade pointing at the platform so I believe this is a good place for you to go to get the worth out of your camera, or practice night photography if you are a photography hobbyist.

In the center of the platform there is a stage, where some traditional Chinese arts are performed. You can also check out the photos of the stage taken by EastCoastLife here.

Apart from all these, there’s also a small section for food called the ‘Food Street’. I personally think it is too much a misnomer since compared to size of the platform, this covers a even smaller area, perhaps a result of lower take up of stalls due to the worsening economic conditions. There’s also a small tent where Singapore Pools is set up, so I guess a lot of people would have gone to pay their homage to the ‘god of fortune’ and then went on to try their luck there.

I personally think it’s a good place to bring your family out and enjoy the Chinese New Year atmosphere. That’s not mentioning the weather the past few days has been cool so it really gives you that Spring feeling. However, my personal advice is, don’t bring your animals or your babies in prams. I have seen people cuddling their dogs, and pushing their baby prams along. Not that I have anything against people with pets or babies, but please consider that the area is already congested and not everyone likes to rub against dog fur, and the tram takes up space which make the congestion worse than it already is.

Marina Barrage (Night)

Went to the Marina Barrage [day photos here] after dinner earlier on with DK, nicole and xinyun. It’s pretty windy down at the Marina Barrage tonight and I am quite surprised that there’s still quite a bit of people even after 9pm.

I took some of these photos with my Olympus C450Z 4.0Megapixels Camera I carried with me in the bag all the time. The reason they looked blurry and over-exposed is because these photos are taken with a slow shutter speed and without a flash (deliberately turned off). That’s not mentioning the photographer (me) suck at taking night shots without a stand.

Places of Interest – Marina Barrage

The Marina Barrage, is one of the latest addition to Singapore’s places of interest. I will not spend more time on explaining what it is, as you can read all about it here. (Hopefully no one will put up any obsequious comments ad nauseum on how this was the Minister Monkey Mentor’s brainchild in that page.)

To go there, take the MRT to the Marina Bay Station along the North-South Line. There is currently a shuttle bus service running back and forth from the Marina Bay MRT Station to the Marina Barrage pump station every 30mins everyday (I think from 8am ~ 8pm). Just follow the signs from the MRT station to the ‘bus stop’, which has no shelter so you might want to bring umbrella to shelther you from the hot sun or the rain. The bus trip takes about 10 minutes.

The Marina Barrage Pump Station is a 3-storey facility, and it gives you a good view of the Straits of Singapore and the skyline of Singapore from a distance. I personally think it would make some great photos after sunset when the lights come on (especially after the Marina Sands Integrated Resort is completed) but I didn’t want to stay late.

It was rather unfortunate when I was there with xinyun mei and her friend, there was a ‘Cat 1’ weather alert (i.e. heavy overcast with lightning strike) and we were forbidden us from going onto the Barrage itself, and also kept off the rooftop of the pump station itself for some time. (That is why you see us eating the waffle at the cafe there. And yes, for the information of all Internet addicts like me, there is Wireless @SG access also. The irritating part is that my mobile phone keeps switching to some blasted Indonesian network!)

Inside the facility is a small ‘museum’ talking about the history of Singapore’s water catchments, the PUB, the Singapore River and Singapore’s aim to be self sustaining in water and a green country. If you take time to go through the displays, it might take probably half an hour or so to clear. A good place to kill some time when you are trapped because of bad weather when you arrive.

Ok, enough of my boring narrative… here’s the slideshow of some photos I took there.

Large Hadron Rap

A Youtube video containing a rap about CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. Now that makes it a lot easier to layman like me to understand what it does and why this is done.

And of course our planet isn’t going to implode when we do this… neither will a black hole appear in the middle of our planet to suck everything in as some would like you to believe.

Lyrics: The Large Hadron Rap

Twenty-seven kilometers of tunnel under ground
Designed with mind to send protons around
A circle that crosses through Switzerland and France
Sixty nations contribute to scientific advance
Two beams of protons swing round, through the ring they ride
‘Til in the hearts of the detectors, they’re made to collide
And all that energy packed in such a tiny bit of room
Becomes mass, particles created from the vacuum
And then…

LHCb sees where the antimatter’s gone
ALICE looks at collisions of lead ions
CMS and ATLAS are two of a kind
They’re looking for whatever new particles they can find.
The LHC accelerates the protons and the lead
And the things that it discovers will rock you in the head.

We see asteroids and planets, stars galore
We know a black hole resides at each galaxy’s core
But even all that matter cannot explain
What holds all these stars together – something else remains
This dark matter interacts only through gravity
And how do you catch a particle there’s no way to see
Take it back to the conservation of energy
And the particles appear, clear as can be

You see particles flying, in jets they spray
But you notice there ain’t nothin’, goin’ the other way
You say, “My law has just been violated – it don’t make sense!
There’s gotta be another particle to make this balance.”
And it might be dark matter, and for first
Time we catch a glimpse of what must fill most of the known ‘Verse.
Because…

LHCb sees where the antimatter’s gone
ALICE looks at collisions of lead ions
CMS and ATLAS are two of a kind
They’re looking for whatever new particles they can find.

Antimatter is sort of like matter’s evil twin
Because except for charge and handedness of spin
They’re the same for a particle and its anti-self
But you can’t store an antiparticle on any shelf
Cuz when it meets its normal twin, they both annihilate
Matter turns to energy and then it dissipates

When matter is created from energy
Which is exactly what they’ll do in the LHC
You get matter and antimatter in equal parts
And they try to take that back to when the universe starts
The Big Bang – back when the matter all exploded
But the amount of antimatter was somehow eroded
Because when we look around we see that matter abounds
But antimatter’s nowhere to be found.
That’s why…

LHCb sees where the antimatter’s gone
ALICE looks at collisions of lead ions
CMS and ATLAS are two of a kind
They’re looking for whatever new particles they can find.
The LHC accelerates the protons and the lead
And the things that it discovers will rock you in the head.

The Higgs Boson – that’s the one that everybody talks about.
And it’s the one sure thing that this machine will sort out
If the Higgs exists, they ought to see it right away
And if it doesn’t, then the scientists will finally say
“There is no Higgs! We need new physics to account for why
Things have mass. Something in our Standard Model went awry.”

But the Higgs – I still haven’t said just what it does
They suppose that particles have mass because
There is this Higgs field that extends through all space
And some particles slow down while other particles race
Straight through like the photon – it has no mass
But something heavy like the top quark, it’s draggin’ its ***
And the Higgs is a boson that carries a force
And makes particles take orders from the field that is its source.
They’ll detect it….

LHCb sees where the antimatter’s gone
ALICE looks at collisions of lead ions
CMS and ATLAS are two of a kind
They’re looking for whatever new particles they can find.

Now some of you may think that gravity is strong
Cuz when you fall off your bicycle it don’t take long
Until you hit the earth, and you say, “Dang, that hurt!”
But if you think that force is powerful, you’re wrong.
You see, gravity – it’s weaker than Weak
And the reason why is something many scientists seek
They think about dimensions – we just live in three
But maybe there are some others that are too small to see
It’s into these dimensions that gravity extends
Which makes it seem weaker, here on our end.
And these dimensions are “rolled up” – curled so tight
That they don’t affect you in your day to day life
But if you were as tiny as a graviton
You could enter these dimensions and go wandering on
And they’d find you…

When LHCb sees where the antimatter’s gone
ALICE looks at collisions of lead ions
CMS and ATLAS are two of a kind
They’re looking for whatever new particles they can find.
The LHC accelerates the protons and the lead
And the things that it discovers will rock you in the head.
