Mobile Broadband Woes..

Either something is faulty with the Huawei K3715 USB Mobile Broadband modem I am using, or something is wrong with the Lenovo X61. I get disconnected so often using the M1 service, I could hardly get connected for even more than 5 minutes.

And no, this is not a problem with the M1 Mobile Broadband service. There is something either seriously wrong with the USB modem or the laptop itself. I cannot be sure because I am also having some problems with the Wireless LAN adaptor on that laptop. I think the problem here may not exactly be the heat from the Wireless adapter because I have tried turning it off entirely and the problem persists. I have reasons to suspect it maybe some patches in the OS, or the perhaps a unstable current supplied to the USB ports, which the Huawei K3715 maybe sensitive to.

I will need to find a day when I can ‘nuke’ the machine back to factory standard. And see if stability will come back to the Huawei K3715 after that. If that doesn’t work then I’ll get a powered 4-port USB hub, and prove my ‘unstable USB supply current’ theory wrong.

Once all that is done I’ll go down to the Huawei Service Centre at Tai Seng Avenue – technically the armpit of Singapore – and make a big fuss to get the damned thing replaced. 😛

In the meantime, I have resorted to getting connected via my M1 wireless broadband using… * gasp * my old Sony Ericsson W550i. Yep, I was asking around if someone has the cable so I can get that connected to my laptop because the original one was run over too often by the wheels of my chair at home, it is now ‘decapitated’. I had tried doing the same with my Nokia 7390 succesfully but it gets a little tedious for me to keep swapping out my SIMcard

FoxTwo pointed out to me that I can just connect it to the laptop using the BluetoothBlueTOOT technology. Why this ah toot (i.e. me) didn’t already think of that is beyond me. And now I have finally and successfully connected my W550i to M1 broadband with it ‘linked’ wirelessly to the X61. And it’s so simple I had to kick myself a few times wondering why I didn’t do so earlier.

Technology bring advances, but at times it has also bring much misery to the generation that came before it. It’s not that I am not aware of the technology or that I don’t know how to use it, but I can now sort of understand why it is difficult for a lot of people to manipulate technology. It is a lesson in humility for me.

On top of which, I admit… I am getting old. And I fully understand now the Chinese lament: 哎,岁月不留人啊![Translation: * sigh * Time waits for nobody.]

Daily Discourse – Ica Stones

My parents routinely picks up the Epoch Times [大紀元時報]. Apparently, this is a Falungong Publication, and that it is even approved also for publication locally by MICA is in itself is a surprise considering how Singapore cozies up to China, going so far to offend even a traditional ally like Taiwan.

The articles in it regularly quote all form of religious writings out of their context to make a point specifically against the government gahmen of the People’s Republic of China and also China’s Communist Party. I normally take the paper with me when I am taking a dump, and read the articles published in it with a pinch bucket of salt.

To me it is nothing more than political propaganda hidden in between articles reporting current events. In fact, I consider much of it as absurd, baseless and even comic relief. I recalled an article which talked about a person that has lived several hundred years and this person was linked to many supposedly ‘historical figures’, including * gasp * the fictional Count of Monte Cristo!

So, once again I took a recent copy of the Epoch Times [date 16th – 23rd December] with me as I did my daily Tora Tora Tora [aka dumping session] the other day. In it, I found this article The History Before History Part III, The Ica Stones. (You can find more of such stuff [here].)

The reason that this article caught my eye was because it said something about humans found beside dinosaurs. Since I am never a fan of the theory of evolution, I would examine anything that would upset the theory, and determine if it is absurd later.

So, after the dumping session, I went on to look up articles on the Ica Stones. There weren’t really much articles on it, and those which exists showed nothing conclusive. In fact, after reading the articles, I was confused. The only thing I am sure of, is the collector himself has collected something like 40,000 stones over a period of 40 over years, and he now displays them in a museum of sorts of his own.

What I am not sure of, is whether the stones are outright forgeries or an elaborate hoax. Or are some of them really ancient artifacts, and some – liked like those depicting men riding dinosaurs and advanced medical procedures – just forgeries made by those with ulterior motives? Personally speaking, I think 40,000 stones is not a small number. It would take up a lot of space to store them and it makes one ask the question just why would anyone carve them for no monetary gain at all?

When I looked at the videos on this matter, I noticed that some of the stones cover a wide range of topics and from the details on some of them, I believe it would take some effect to make each of them.

In short, if these are an outright hoax, this seems to be beyond the ability of one person to create. In fact, if it is really a hoax, then there must be a big team behind this and it is a surprise no one has yet discover the people perpetrating it. Perhaps someone should find out just how much money the collector himself has gained from the exposure he is getting out of this, or if anyone else is benefiting from this at all.

However, assuming that they are found to be genuine, then either we are looking at the work of a fiction writer of an ancient civilisation or a historical record that will baffle everyone. But it’s unlikely to be a fiction because it’s going to be hard for people to read it or distribute the story.

Anyway, the Ica stones – if real – is somewhat of a puzzle. But at this point of time when no one has verified it’s authenticity, it is nothing more than just a curiosity.

Seen on MRT – Kah Kui Kui (脚开开)

The lady (leftmost) in this photo is very careless. She has fallen asleep but she was sitting with her legs spread wide. I wondered if she realized that certain perverts goes through much pain to get up-skirt videos or photos and here she is providing it for free. Had the person two seats away not been a lady, she would have enjoyed the view very much.

Anyway, the lady still enjoyed the view. Apparently, she was chuckling away with her boyfriend, and from what I saw in the reflection, she was obviously discussing what was across from them. Her boyfriend, who was seated right next to me, had the papers up in front of him to block the view – either because he was embarrassed as he is a really decent guy, or he is just putting up an act.

And fortunately, the pole in the center of this section of the train was blocking my view. I am quite sure I couldn’t resist the temptation to stare if it was just right in front of me. And I also won’t be taking the photo nor blogging about it. Outrage of modesty is not a small matter and just which toot will put evidence of his crimes online for all to see?

Either way, Watsons at Jurong Point definitely won’t be selling me an extra bottle of Eye-Mo and earning money from me today.

Liverpool 2 – 1 ManUre

Liverpool 2 – 1 ManUre

I am no fan of Liverpool, but any day ManUre losses, is a good day!

I was so sad when Tevez scored after 3 minutes. But as the commentator said, “… started so well, but end up in ruins.” How that sounded like music to my ears!

Well done, Wes Brown, for your own goal – you forgot you aren’t bought by Liverpool? And well done, Babel. That was a really nice volley right to the top of the net!

In short… well done, Liverpool!!

And what a nice picture to see where ManUre is now… nowhere near the top 4? Let’s how enough shits happen to them to keep them off the top 4 for good.

After reading posts about irritating bloggers…

Cowboy Caleb wrote an article about irritating local bloggers, and subsequently Patlaw wrote a piece to share what she thinks Singapore blogosphere needs.

The one thing I agree with them strongly is this: While it is perfectly alright for one to use their blog as an electronic diary and write everything about themselves, it is almost clear that unless there’s something really exceptional about your life – e.g. heiress to a chain of hotels or a singer claiming to be a virgin after you lost it at 17 or 14 – no one really gives a flying damn about your life. Especially when you endlessly whine about your own boyfriend / girlfriend, spouse, parents, colleagues, work, wants, or even the lack of money and blog traffic, with nothing insightful to offer in between.

Thus, I would like to say Patlaw’s blog post is thought provoking. It is interesting to see ideas being thrown out as an attempt to improve the local blogging scene. I recalled a friend once pointed out that one can tell that a blog (or a forum) is a local one just by looking at the quality of the content and the comments. By his measure, most local blogs do not measure up at all. When he said that, it reminded me of a few blog posts recently written by a blogger about why no companies are looking at local bloggers to do marketing etc. (I will not refer to them to start flame wars.)

In those posts, he wrote about an incident of some nasty remarks being said behind his back and events he is involved in. He further went on to claim that such vicious pettiness and backstabbing impacts the credibility of all local bloggers as a whole and such acts is what deterred companies from the idea of using local bloggers. Just how very noble his concern for improving the local blogosphere!

Unfortunately after all is said, no one – other than his own inner circle or the good friend who carried the tale to him – has a clue who, and what incident he is talking about. For all intentions and purposes, whatever written there might as well have been fictional. Even if any of that has any nuance of truth, it makes one wonder if those attacks is not actually a response for his own nastiness and haughtiness elsewhere. I mean, it is as if people has nothing better to do than to attack him for no reasons at all? It looks to be more like a sign of desperation, where he conveniently blames others for his own failures because his vision of social media isn’t taking off. Really, I must say if he does some self evaluation to figure out why he is being attacked, it would have been a lot better than that load of hubris.

So much for all that talk about credibility when one has nothing to show! I would rather read my friend nocturne, who all along called himself the ‘Incredible Hulk’ – pun intended!

Anyway, let me just say there is one specific point raised in Cowboy Caleb’s posts which I need to comment on. For starters, I am guilty of using micro-blogging tools like Twitter & Plurk to publicise announce my new blog post. The only redeeming aspect of that is that my Plurk and Twitter is on private mode, and none of those following me has expressed any objection as yet (I hope they won’t). I think that shouldn’t be a real concern to me since I also at times ask my colleagues and friends who aren’t bloggers if they have read my latest blog post too.

Next, I definitely agree that blogs with too much advertisements are irritating. I have come across some blogs which I have ceased to visit due to exactly that reason. There is an ad between every paragraph break, or the ads themselves occupy more space than the actual blog content. It simply makes one wonder if the content isn’t added as an after-thought.

As for those so-called ‘crappy blogs’ , there is only one kind I disliked intensely – the kind belonging to teenagers who thinks their ‘wealth of experience’ grant them the right to have an opinion that the others are wrong when they don’t like what they read. And as if that isn’t bad enough, they seem to think those whom they considered to be in error shouldn’t even be allowed to express their opinion anymore! For e.g. a blogger who formerly live in some Pacific Island start telling Singaporeans near the MacRitchie Reservoir to stop complaining by saying how bad floods are back home. When pointed out just our ridiculous that point of view is, they resort to other avenues – namely Plurk or Twitter – to ‘provide more insight to readers into their opinion’ : by means of denouncing and gossiping among sycophants and bootlickers.

However, I do not agree with Cowboy Caleb’s examples that those blogs sites ‘connect very strongly with their audience’ . While those sites are updated regularly and the person updating it should be given an award for diligence, not to mention provide a service and convenience to those who did not set up (or know how to set up) their own RSS news feeds, I do not actually recall that they ‘have their own opinions’ . Maybe I should again drop by and visit these sites again to re-evaluate them since it was a long time ago when I remarked that sites regurgitating news articles from new sources is stealing, and not offering any compelling content. In fact, I would think even Google Alerts could have done even better in providing those content if the search parameters are done correctly.

That’s all I have to say for now.
