Daily Discourse – Irritating Fliers

The photo on the left shows the state of one of my neighbour’s gate, and it reminds me just how irked I am with fliers being distributed in this manner. As most letter boxes now come with a locking feature which prevents such trash from being placed into our letter box, they now ‘go the extra mile’ to deliver that trash to the doorstep. It is even more irritating than locksmiths pasting little stickers with their numbers on the toggle switch of the door bell, since there is at least one of these fliers almost everyday while locksmith stickers are far and few in between.

Whether this neighbour is away on tour I do not know, though I personally suspect that the people staying in this unit are just tenants. I have noticed that the faces change every now and then and unlike my other neighbours, none of them cared to mingle nor greet anyone when we walked past. it is possible that the actual owner has illegally rented the entire unit to foreigners without even getting an approval from the HDB (Housing and Development Board).

Anyway, I recalled when I was a teenager and a member of NPCC (National Police Cadet Corps), one of the activities was to form Neighbourhood Watch Groups and earn a Crime Prevention Badge. The primary objective of these groups is to take note of strangers in the neighbourhood and report suspicious activities to the police. We were also shown videos on crime prevention. From these videos I learn that on top of having an effective police force and good locks (or security features), and keeping close attention on your own valuables, the other effective way of preventing crime is to avoid getting the unwanted attention of crooks.

For example, walking around counting notes after withdrawing cash from a bank or the ATM may attract the attention of snatchers, or ladies walking alone in the dark wearing skimpily may attract the attention of molesters and rapists. In fact, back then it was suggested that if we were to go on tour, we should cancel our newspaper subscription as stacks of uncollected newspaper is as good as screaming out to crooks that no one is home. These uncollected fliers simply attract unwanted attention as well.

A sister-in-Christ shared with me that this is exceptionally bad in the newer towns like Seng Kang and Punggol. She claimed that she gets at least 5 pieces everyday without fail! There was once she called the NPP (Neighbourhood Police Post) for advice before going overseas for two weeks, and their response was simply, “Sorry Madam, there’s nothing we can do. Just make sure your gates are secured.” Incidentally, that was the same response I get from my own NPP when I once reported an incident many years ago where someone keeps shaking my metal gate (I supposed to test whether it’s properly locked) everyday. I had tried to identify the culprit but everytime I get to the my door, the guy has already ran. Even though the NPP sent a patrol car down with two constables to my place to understand the situation, they seem reluctant to step up patrols in the area.

While I agree that I should secure my door, my main objective was to put an end to that nuisance, not to mention that I was a little concerned that my house might be broken in one of those days. Fortunately for the SPF (Singapore Police Force), the visit by the police constables was good enough to deter the prankster and put an end to his random and daily ‘gate shaking’.

Are break-ins so uncommon these days? Perhaps it makes up a very small proportion of the crimes committed in Singapore that the police no longer pay a close attention to the necessary crime prevention measures against it. Frankly, it is my considered opinion that this malpractice be stopped once and for all. After all, beside the matter of crime prevention it also reduces the amount of rubbish that is being produced. In fact, if fewer fliers are printed, it is also doing a part towards forest conservation.

By the way, on top of putting an end to the fliers from these blasted property agents, perhaps we should also look at putting an end to cold calls coming from them. I get calls as early as 8:30am in the morning or as late as 10:30pm at night making inquiries on whether I am interested in selling my flat. For goodness sake, stop calling! I’ll call you when I really want to sell my unit.

Simply Jean: Orchard Road Floods

Commentary – Sungei Orchard

“Yesterday’s event, I was told by the PUB, occurs once every 50 years. It could be tomorrow. But we have to plan accordingly. Most importantly, we have to have a proper drainage system… (that is) being continually upgraded, and a proper response system.”

– Environment and Water Resources Mini$ter Yaacob Ibrahim, 20.11.2009

That, was barely seven months ago. To me, the number seven is Divine because on the seventh day, God rested.

Even if Orchard Road wasn’t flooded today, I am quite sure those along Bukit Timah Road would beg to differ. If I am not wrong, floods occurred regularly along parts of Bukit Timah Road whenever there’s heavy rain. Just last year, floods also affected areas like Thomson near MacRitchie Reservoir together with parts of Bukit Timah Road.

This morning, while I was shivering in the cold air-conditioned room in the office, I received a call from a friend who just drove past Keppel Road informing me that the car park of the old KTM station at Tanjong Pagar, the leftmost lane of Keppel Road, and parts of Cantonment Link were all flooded at least up to knee depth. He mentioned that the splash around his car reminded him of the days when we took our armoured vehicles out for flotation exercises during National Service.

It is ironical that my mother used to tell me that floods have more or less ceased to exist ‘ever since Lao Lee became Prime Minister’. While my mother’s memory may have been in error, for it to occur today in Orchard Road really takes the cake. I wonder what the tourists in Marriot Hotel and the other hotels along Scotts Road would be thinking when they looked out of their hotel rooms at waters below. To me, it’s a great loss of national prestige. After all, being the 9th most expensive city in Asia with some of the best paid civil servants serpents in the world, I expect the infrastructure built to be able to cater to this and would have preferred that floods (no matter how fleeting) remain nothing but stories my parents’ generation will be telling to their grandchildren. However, I guess it would be rather difficult for the government gahmen to do anything to increase the capacity of the Stamford Canal, as I noticed that much of it is now concealed with only very small stretches (next to car park opposite Centrepoint and along Handy Road) exposed to the surface.

Even so, it has been a really long time since I heard about a flood at the junction of Patterson Road, Scotts Road and Orchard Road. That was at least 15 to 20 years ago, and it wasn’t even a real event. It was a joke in a track in Kopikat Klan’s “Why you so like that?” cassette which suggests to me that floods must have regularly occurred in that area during that time.

Whatever the case is, I have never imagined that this will happen. For as long as I can remember that little park on top of Orchard MRT Station, there has never been a flood at that very junction (or along Orchard Road). For those who can still remember, that little park used to be a favorite hangout for Filipino maids during weekends before Ion Orchard was built. Is it sheer coincidence that not long after that area is developed into yet another soulless monument to consumerism, that junction is hit by a flood?

Anyway, not long ago a report on the performance of town councils (which I considered to have a political agenda) was released to shame the opposition parties. I was told by a friend that Orchard Road falls under the Tanjong Pagar town council – listed in that very same report as best and number lampar 1 town council. While ensuring that the drains are not clogged and the general cleanliness of Orchard Road probably have nothing to do with the town council itself, it is divine poetic justice if it is true Orchard Road is within the area under the Tanjong Pagar Town Council. I can’t help but chuckled when I think of it.

Anyway, here are the pictures loaded to Twitter by some of the netizens. Take a look at Orchard Road Sungei Orchard, Singapore’s very own Huang He (黄河, i.e. Yellow River).

Commentary – “Ze CHC De-Bait”

Even before the investigations are concluded, a clear line has been drawn. On one side, there is a group which is convinced that there is some fraud being committed. They are convinced that the Pastor Kong Hee is the chief suspect (and to some extent, his wife as well). They have made allegations to that effect gleefully and with abandon. In my personal opinion, it is foolish to do this in the public domain without any hard evidence. Should investigations clear the pastor later, he (and possibly the church) can bring charges against the most vociferous of them and make a good example.

Anyway, there is already a Facebook page called “We believe City Harvest Church is guilty and corrupted!!” with 766 users at the point when I penned this post. I have joined the page to read what is being posted, but I do not endorse anything written. From what I have seen so far, most of the people who have commented there simply didn’t like City Harvest Church (CHC) and how it is run. To some extent even New Creation Church (NCC) is getting some flak. A certain post on a matter in the U.S. leaves me with the suspicion that certain elements there simply had an axe to grind against Christianity as a whole. I probably won’t stay on it for long, since comments or articles linked on the page appears to be degenerating into general Christian bashing.

Fortunately, at this point of time there weren’t a lot of counter comments from City Harvest Church members (or ‘Harvesters’, as some called themselves) on the page nor has it degenerated into a general meaningless flame war. There were only two (who maybe imposters) with an atrocious attitude that is unbecoming of a Christian. While they have only posted one comment each, the comments basically dismissed anyone opposing CHC either for being non-Christians or having contributed no money to the church. Fortunately, those were the only ones I can see on that page. Meantime, there is some gibberish on the page which looked like an attempt to flood it. I hope it has nothing do with any person(s) affiliated with CHC because employing ‘brown shirt’ tactics to silence detractors is just soooo low class.

I have also noticed some pro-CHC pages (or counter-groups) on Facebook but I am not really interested in the mutual back-scratching among CHC members. Call me biased but I can do better with less fan-boyish rhetorics. (I have enough of those just by reading comments from iFreaks going gaga over an Apple product.)

From what I have heard from my friends, they are rather disturbed by the rhetorics which in most cases are just scripture quoted out of the context to suit the writers’ own purpose. There’s even a silly dude making remarks about buying arms and fighting back. He seems to believe that with church members numbering half the size of SAF and ‘God on their side’, victory is assured.*shudders*

While this silly dude may probably be just joking or thinking he is being gung-ho, it will be no laughing matter if the ISD comes knocking if it sees those comments as seditious and a threat to national security. Sedition remains a serious crime in this country.

Anyway, from the bits and pieces I have gathered from news reports, blog posts, excerpts of comments from CHC members, forum postings etc, it is crystal clear to me most CHC members are convinced that nothing illegal has been committed. They have utmost faith in the church’s leadership and believe that this is either the act of the devil, a trial from God or some kind of set up. Since no one can yet say for sure whether there is any wrongdoing , I only hope that their faith is not misplaced. After all, it is also written: It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. [Psalms 118:8 KJV]. Having confidence in the moral character of one’s church leaders and having faith / trusting in God are two matters entirely.

Based on their conviction, it is almost certain that church members will come together to collectively pray (and even fast) until this matter becomes clear. But while they look to God, they might also want to rein in the loud blabbermouths going around making remarks (like those of that silly dude) which do nothing to defuse the situation. If there is any visible effect, it convinces detractors (or CHC-haters or whatever you want to call them) even more that the church and its members are problems in themselves.

Meantime, there seems to be efforts presenting the Pastor Kong as a good friend, easy going person and a nice guy etc. While there is nothing wrong in letting the general public know more about Kong Hee the person more than Kong Hee the Pastor, the effect is negligible if the general objective is to win over people into defending him. The people who dislike (or even hate) Kong Hee will not be swayed. There is no doubt even members of the Triads would consider their own brothers good men and loyal brothers. That said, I am not insinuating that the Pastor is comparable to Triad members or any wrong has been done. I am just giving an example to bring out the point that all people are multi-facet and there is a side of them we may never know.

Furthermore, it is rather amusing some believed this to be a conspiracy of some sort by those who are jealous of the church’s ‘achievements’. I wonder who these ‘sore-eye monsters’ might be and what motivates them to ‘fix’ CHC. These CHC members might as well just believe to be another of the Illuminati’s conspiracy if they choose to believe that the COC (Commissioner of Charities) and the CAD (Commercial Affairs Department) is not just doing their due diligence to ensure that all the accounting of the church’s finances are in proper order.

Some CHC members are clearly letting the numbers and success of the church get over their heads. It is doubtful any non-Christians will be wowed or bothered by the 33,000+ figure because there might probably be more devotees at the renowned Waterloo Street Kuanyin Temple collectively than worshippers in CHC. Now that’s something for these jokers to think about when they talk big about their numbers. To add on, if these CHC members are so concerned with numbers, they should (and must, since they contributed to it) question the finances of the church even though ordinary members cannot attend the AGM. According to this blogger, $86 million of contribution is collected but only around $2.9 million is committed to charitable work while a good $9.3 million is paid in salary (including bonus) to just 150+ church workers. One might need to ask what is being done with the remaining hoard of money, not to mention why are normal members expected to contribute just as everyone else but treated as some kind of second class members in the church?

Finally, if there’s anything the Singapore government gahmen is even concerned with CHC, it would be that all regulatory requirements are fulfilled and everything is in proper order in accordance to the law. Our mini$ter$ are even more successful than Pastor Kong and the CHC and they have no reasons to be even jealous of its success. They clearly won’t lose sleep over CHC’s numbers nor its purchase into a major shopping mall in Singapore, but they will not sleep well if any accountability issues in the church’s finances leads to some unnecessarily upheavals in our otherwise harmonious society. They are now focused on putting more speed into the economic recovery to prepare for the next General Elections.

So before I end, I would say what a former AWARE ExCo member has said to all these blabbermouths:

Shut up and sit down!

Current Affairs – The City Harvest Church Investigation

Early in March, when the news broke that the Commissioner of Charities (COC) has questioned City Harvest Church (CHC) about its $310 million stake in Suntec Singapore, I said that it is high time to do a full audit of their financial accounts. In my opinion, it would be good for a government gahmen agency to perform this audit to assure not just the members of the church, but also the general public that everything is in order in the wake of the NKF and Renci affairs. While I am not expecting any wrongdoing by the church’s leaders lea-duhs, it is necessary to be assured that no one else attempts the sort of ‘accounting wizardry’ experienced by Asia Breweries or SIA. Christians or not, we are all sinners who can fall to temptation.

Thus, it certainly didn’t come as a surprise that the COC called in the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) to bring in members of the church for questioning. With that much money in the church, there would definitely be some accounting errors or discrepancies in which the authorities may want a detailed and proper explanation from those who are involved in the finances. At this point of time, I am certain very few people can tell exactly what is really happening here and it will definitely take several months before everything will become clear.

However, the hubbub surrounding the Suntec purchase reminds me of why I dislike and disagree with this New Age church. Beginning with the ‘Prosperity Gospel’ which I considered nothing more than false doctrine. The entire premise of this logic trap is simply that contributing to the church’s revenue will have God bless someone many times in return. I am appalled how the entire Gospel of Jesus Christ was centered on the theme in which God now became the wealth multiplying basin (聚宝盆) in Chinese myths. If that is true there will never be any poor Christians. Christians will all be giving while weeping tears of joy, knowing that God will return their money in abundance. In fact, they should just give and give and give until the point where the overflowing returns make one richer than even Warren Buffet. I was initially surprised that people can be taken in by such hogwash until I realise just how cool and appealing the idea of having God as one’s own money printing press. It certainly even beats being the chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserves yourself! Is it even a surprise why my friend’s 15-year old son told her that he considered CHC some kind of MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) when there are people constantly ‘giving testimonies on how they are blessed’ after they have given unreservedly to God? Sounds like one of those MLM prep-talks in which the top earners will speak to spur the newcomers on.

The complete failure in logic aside, I am shocked that no one see that if this is how God operates, then it induces jealousy among the believers. Just why would God bless someone more than another if He went to the Cross unconditionally to offer His life so all maybe spared from His wrath? How does the concept of the ‘Prosperity Gospel’ reinforce the image of God’s unconditional love? It was almost like saying if one keeps giving his money to God, He will love you more. Really, how can one convince a believer who gives money to the Cai Shen (财神) aka Money God temple that Jesus is different from his god? I recalled someone among my friends even went so far in using the Chinese term 神棍 (pronounced ‘shen gun’) which literally translate as ‘religious con-men’, especially when they heard how even students who have no income worry about their contribution.

While I certainly still believe that God loves a joyful giver, I believe this refers to the giver who is giving not for his own gains and benefits, but for the common good so that none of God’s faithful would be in lack. My personal belief is that the money is to be used to lift others from their physical suffering so they can pay more attention to what God has to say to them, or free them from the bondage of their financial needs to be a servant to God. I am in the opinion that God never intend for Tithing to be an instrument for His Church to solicit and then hoard a large amount of money in reserves. Furthermore, I am quite certain God never intended His Church to build earthly monuments that He will sweep away in His new world, or for it to become a pseudo-investment bank where pastors and church workers are paid like bankers. I read that the CHC pays its 150 staff approximately S$9.3 million annually and that would mean an average of almost $60,000 per person every year. I am however skeptical that many among the 150 can report earning that much. Call it ‘using high pay to retain talent’ if you wish, but it is sort of sad when compared to the late Dr Goh Keng Swee who served as an advisor to China, he refused an annual salary of USD 60,000, citing that he was only there to help and not to profit from it. (There is no surprise there why there is an outpour of grief in the passing of this great man, one whose likes we will unlikely see again for a long time to come.)

Next, it reminds me of Ho Yeow Sun, ex-pastor of the church now turned singer. I certainly recalled that a sister-in-Christ from Church of Our Saviour who left CHC and returned to her home church after the first Ho Yeow Sun CD was pushed during cellgroup meetings. While it is arguable that this probably is just the actions of over-zealous members who loved their one time pastor very much, I often find it rather incredulous that the support given to her in the church itself were all simply self driven and spontaneous by members. Though the official statement is that the church did not openly support Ho nor encourage its members to, I have read blog posts to the contrary, and even a case where a member of the church took the matter to the press.[1] [2]

I laughed out loud when the church repeatedly claims that the support is comparable (or perhaps equal) to that given to other members. After all, I don’t recall CHC promoting member Jack Neo’s movies. However, I wouldn’t press that point since there are probably 101 reasons why that didn’t happen. Either way, that reminds me how CHC categorically deny asking teens who have no income to contribute to the church building fund too. Though from what I read on Christian-related forums, it gives me the impression that it was never explicit was done to stop these teens. While CHC may place the responsibilities of their action solely on the members themselves, I would be surprised that the members did not originally ‘felt inspired’ to do so without some urging during church service (where they were explicitly informed that it was meant only for the working adults) and peer pressure from other members in their own cellgroups.

On top than that, I often find it puzzled that members of CHC do not find the church’s close association with Ho’s otherwise secular career a matter of concern. Any criticism or question to her secular career is often answered with the alleged mission work she is doing in Taiwan. It was sort of like a subtle slap across the face, where detractors are asked (what Steve Jobs asked those who disparaged him), “By the way, what have you done that’s so great? Do you create anything, or just criticize others work and belittle their motivations?” Frankly, regardless of her works, any Christian can be rightly concerned that her actions might stumble another Christian, if not setting a bad example. How Ho Yeow Sun carries herself in public would open the rest of the Christian community to questions and scrutiny (if not open attacks), especially when Christians are expected to behave with a higher moral standard due to their hard-line stand on matters of morality.

What is even more amazing is how her husband, the very founder of the church, try to justify her actions and life style through church publications and his own blog. After justifying how the church should embrace pop culture and post modernism, it was most disturbing when Kong Hee explained the China Wine video as a music video about a girl who has to take up an extra job at a nightclub to make ends meet for her family. Frankly, I must admit that I am a total moron in understanding in so-called fartistic artistic videos which China Wine probably classifies as one! After all, I really can’t see what in that hell-spawned video was portraying just that! It definitely reminds me of a satirical scene in The Onion Movie, in which ‘Melissa Cherry’ , a pop idol in that movie has an explanation for everyone of her suggestive music videos and songs.

Another thing I disagree with is the extravagance. It definitely caused many raised eyebrows when they hear about a S$47-million titanium-clad church ‘monument to capitalism’ in Jurong West Street 91. The front facade of the building is clad with the same titanium that wraps the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Call it a modern Sistine Chapel if you wish, but remember that land sales for religious purposes by the Singapore gahmen are on a 30-year lease. My understanding is that should the gahmen decide not to extend the lease after 30 years, CHC will have restore the land to vacant status – i.e. CHC will need to pay to demolish the building.

CHC’s lea-duhs might want to argue that there is a Biblical basis to all these – from the church building in Jurong West to their purchase into Suntec City. However I consider it to be yet another faulty theology since the very essence of both the Tabernacle and the two Temples of Jerusalem was to emphasise God’s presence in His people. The fact that with the coming of the Holy Spirit and our bodies being the Temple of God, where then is the Biblical basis for such wasteful projects? Even if CHC members want to argue that how they spend their money is an internal matter that is not open to discussion, criticism, comments or ridicule, has it mattered to them how some other churches actually commits to God annually how much they will pledge to support certain community services, charities etc? It warms my heart to see that when there is a shortfall, a church prayed fervently to God together to provide and God answers their prayers. It strengthens my faith when God has blessed beyond what is pledged and the church then expand their scope of support. It assures me that there is almost certainly no avenue for fraud and misuse, when every cent givem without reserve to the church is used to fulfill God’s command for us to be His light and salt to the world.

There is a difference between trusting God and relying on a regimental regime, sales pitch and faulty theology to obtain the money. I have never for once believe that God has provided to us on Earth so we can enjoy our lives when He mentioned that we should store our riches in heaven. For a church to hoard a large amount of money is simply subjecting its members to temptation. Some CHC members will believe that the CAD investigations is nothing more but a trial for the lea-duhs and the church and this may even mobilise them to fast and pray.

I simply hope their faith is not misplaced. After all, should the investigation unravels a scandal, it really does nothing to strengthen the faith of the believers. This summarises much of what I disagree with City Harvest Church.

Addendum 【12-11-2011】:
It has been more than 17 months and there has been no updates on the investigations. It did not take that long to investigate Renci. Just what is going on here? The general public has a right to know the outcome of these investigations even if it did not turn up any wrong doing.

Addendum 2 【27-06-2012】:
My opinion on the latest development here.
