Mozzie-llah Alert: Somewhere in Sembawang…

This picture was taken from a friend’s home, which is a landed property somewhere in Sembawang. The area is listed by the NEA as a dengue hotspot.

It appeared to us that the roof of this house has been in this condition for quite a long time. About a year, at least. We have been wondering if the roof itself is properly drained and if some stagnant water is trapped there to serve as a breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes.

Almost every member of her family, including herself, her father, and her son and daughter, have been afflicted with dengue in the last 3 – 4 weeks. And in her own case, she was out with fever for 5 days.

This has taken quite a toll on her, as she has to take care of her own business and yet have to go to the hospital regularly.

So far, the NEA has not yet taken any action to inspect the area. We suspect that even when informed, their hands are tied since the house is habitated. In fact, can the NEA even ask to inspect the area in the first place?

At this point my friend is facing a dilemma. She does not want to confront her neighbour as she does not want another Everitt Road situation. She also does not wish her neighbour to be fined as it appears that only an old lady lives there. But what can be done about this? What if this place is indeed a dengue breeding spot and the owner of this house has no money to repair to roof? Will the neighbours have to languish and live under the constant threat of a potential dengue breeding spot if that is the case?

静思書軒…

Once again, back to the topic of ‘shrines’. Here’s a really nice one I have found recently at 静思書軒… along the food street (aka Smith Street) in China Town.

I suppose the place didn’t need such publicity, but other than the toilet, the place is really cozy and it serves good tea at reasonable prices. That’s not mentioning that the staff is friendly and service standards are pretty good..

So, please patronise the place, and no, I am not encouraging you to just go there for the toilet.

Addendum 【July 2010】

The place has closed down a year or so after this blog post. I had forgotten about this post and only a recent visit reminds me that I should post an update.

Bloggers Handbook

A handbook that offers advice to bloggers who want to protect themselves from recrimination and censors has been released by Reporters Without Borders. The media watchdog said it gives people who want to set up a blog tips on how to do so, how to publicise it, as well as how to establish credibility. It also offers advice about writing blogs from countries with tough media restrictions, such as Iran and China. The handbook was part-funded by the French gover-min.

A little too late for the 3 clowns who got charged for sedition, and this probably wouldn’t save you either if you crossed the Tali-PAP gover-min. In other words, if you don’t want to get into trouble with the authorities, here’s a really short summary on what to do: Don’t even say it.

And since I am on the topic of blogging, it just occurred to me that the charges brought to bear on those 3 bloggers chilled the blogger community. It makes people afraid to talk, especially topics on race, politics, etc. It makes them fear being charged for sedition. In other words, this new medium of blogging which can be used for political commentary is suddenly quiet and afraid. The conspiracy theorist in me finds that this is quite convenient since all the disaffected talk is gone right before the coming elections.

And did I mention that if these 3 are successfully charged for sedition, it then set a precedence in terms of law? Now, sedition can be used to get people on racism. But not the ‘Harmony Act’ or whatever!

The beast just won’t die…

Chain mails is a beast that just won’t die. And now that stupid song ‘Hotel California’ is running in my head after I read this. Bah!

A powerpoint presentation claiming that Mondain the Evil Wizard Mondex is planning to replace money with biochips embedded in people’s heads and hands came through the post today. It is very interesting, and no doubt it either scared the shit out of many devoted Christians or it makes them more fervent. What more scares them or convinces them than evidence that confirms as passage in the Book of Revelations?

Revelations 13:16 -18:

He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead,

so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.

This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man’s number. His number is 666.

Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately, for some Christians), the device pictured in the powerpoint presentation is a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip – also known as an ‘ID chip’, used – among other purposes – to assist retailers with Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC). Tiny RFID chips can be embedded in products (or their packaging) and when triggered by sensors, these chips emit short bursts of identifying data streamed via radio waves. It is a device designed primarily as a replacement for the bar-code system.

Other uses for RFID chips have included implanting them in pets to help identify the owners should the animals become lost (a collar and tag can too easily come loose or be removed), or implanting them in humans to encode vital information that emergency medical personnel might need to know when treating a patient who is unconscious or unable to speak.

Granted, that is has been used in humans, but the main purpose here is for medical and rescue purposes, and not what the presentation suggests. And by the way, one should stay on guard for the return of the Lord Jesus all the time and not just start doing it when they see an article like that or when disasters like a tsunami or a hurricane hits them right in the face.

For more information on this falsehood, read this.

Chain Mails Once More…

This landed in my mailbox today with an eye-catching subject: Why Tsunami~~~~ Indonesia – 14th May 1998… All Chinese Girl Victim…

It was an article claiming that this is God’s punishment for Indonesia for what happened in 1998, during the twilight days of the Soeharto regime.

I recalled that during that chaotic period, an organisation called huaren.org or something was also posting up a lot of such pics, and ultimately admitting to some of them being falsified. If the original intention of the originator of this article was to create awareness of the atrocities done to the Indonesia Chinese, it is my considered opinion that he has failed dismally.

Such articles are completely meaningless, and utterly unhelpful. While I am not discounting the credibility of the story in the picture itself, I do have a big problem with the assertion that the tsunami is a punishment from God for what happened in 1998.

What has the people at Penang, Phuket, Sri Lanka, Southern India and even the Maldives got anything to do with these atrocities committed in 1998? That’s not mentioning that the perpetrators, if these atrocities are at all real, are not even Sumatrans for starters!

The Almighty God I know will not resort to lashing out at those who aren’t even guilty of the atrocities mentioned in the first place. If God wants to punish those who are guilty, He is capable of higher precision than resorting to the use of a tsunami.

If you need to know more, all you need to do is read the Bible to find out.
