127.0.0.1     xiaxue.blogspot.com

I was reading Publiceducator’s post on his blog and out of fun I commented that if we don’t like to read someone, we can always put that person’s blog address into our host file in c:windowssystem32driversetc.

For e.g., if you don’t like this particular blog, you can just put the following entry into the host file:

127.0.0.1     xiaxue.blogspot.com

This will work as long as your browser does not use a proxy server for access. However, you can also use a .pac file as a configuration script. All you need to do is open notepad, and fill in the following text and then save the file with a .pac extension in c:. (For e.g. fxxkupblogs.pac)

function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
{if (shExpMatch (host, “xiaxue.blogspot.com”)) return “127.0.0.1:8080;”;
return “DIRECT;”
}

After which, you should have the browser use this file to determine what proxy to use. For e.g. in Firefox, you choose Automatic proxy configuration File URL and enter this: file:///c:/fxxkupblogs.pac.

And you are done. Even if by accident you clicked on a link pointing to that abominable site, you will NEVER end up there.

PS: Let me know if the code doesn’t work. I had a whole lot of other things in mine, and I cut and pasted out this part as an example so I might have carelessly removed some other parts I shouldn’t have removed.

Inconvenient Truth

While talking to a friend the other day about CO2 emissions and Global Warming, my friend suddenly threw me an unexpected question:

“How much money do you have riding on the ‘alternate energies’ industry?”

I was taken aback by the question and he further clarified, “It is my considered opinion, that Al Gore’s ‘Inconvenient Truth’ may have taken many people for a ride and he may have a lot of money riding on all these ‘Alternate Energies’ industries. I don’t think Al Gore really gives a damn about the environment considering all the bad press he gets about the energy he uses in his home. That’s not mentioning that the Bush family has strong ties with the petroleum industry and this may just be Al Gore’s way of getting back at Bush for ‘stealing’ the presidency from him in 2000.”

Quite a wild conspiracy theory, but not without merits. And on further thinking, it reminded me of a discussion on the ping.sg shoutbox with 2 other pingsters – arzhou and miccheng. Mic pointed out, that global warming may not just be due to just increase output in CO2 – or even methane – emissions, and he emphasized that he is all for reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases for the very purpose of having a less polluted atmosphere and not for the sake of ‘containing Global Warming’.

Anyway, there have been documentaries refuting that claim and I have also read articles indicating that this might also have something to do with an increase output of energy from our star – Sol (more commonly known as the Sun).

Still, a lot of people further argued that the messed up weather patterns, the stronger hurricanes and typhoons, the melting of ice caps, and the increased in rainfall and more severe flooding is a testimony of ‘global warming’.

Well, it maybe true, but more severe storms would happen as long as there is an increase in heat energy trapped in the oceans and the atmosphere. Being a layman, it is my opinion that more severe storms is a way for the planet to regulate the temperature, and to release the excess energy that is introduced.

Furthermore, more severe flooding has more to do with drainage (or the lack of it), and the elevation of the land than with rain. Take for e.g. New Orleans. Many were quick to point to the failure of the dykes as the main reason. However it was also pointed out that New Orleans is sinking (and Bangkok and Venice too!) and the dykes themselves were to be blamed for this. One of the reasons, if I got it correctly, is that the dykes removed the ability of the Mississippi River to dump fresh soil on its banks.

Now, let us look further than just the result of air pollution causing Global Warming to the cause and effect of some of the other environmental problems that we have, all as a result of our abuse and / or unsustainable use of the planet’s resources.

  1. Bad water management #1 (Overuse of underground water) -> Depleted water table and land sinkage.
  2. Bad water management #2 (Indiscriminate irrigation on acidic land) -> Displacement of salts into arable land making them barren.
  3. Bad water management #3 (Dumping of unprocessed industrial waste / sewage into rivers / lakes) -> Death of marine organisms and a possible collapse of the river / lake eco-system.
  4. Bad water management #4 (Bad Drainage) -> When a worse than normal storm hits you, you are going to be swimming.
  5. Deforestation and the loss of grassland -> Erosion of arable land.
  6. The loss of marshland / swamp -> Removes the one obstacle preventing wter erosion of land.
  7. Invasion of foreign species -> Destruction of local fauna and flora as a result of competition from species that indigenous species have no defense against.
  8. Excessive use of fertilisers -> Fungal blooms that destroys marine eco-systems and fresh water sources.
  9. Excessive use of insecticides -> Consumption of dead poisoned insects harming other creatures.
  10. Excessive amount of waste -> Non-biodegradables like plastics choking up the landscape.

And the above is an incomplete list because that’s a list of things I can remember from reading Jared Diamond’s Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed.

I do suggest you read that book for a better understanding of the herculean tasks in dealing with our environmental problems and not be too carried away by Al Gore and all those stars from Hollywood. And I am not suggesting you ignore their message anyway, but just reminding you that Global Warming isn’t the one and only environmental problem we have, and there are other problems that exist which could make Global Warming just that much worse than it already is. In fact, the case studies in Diamond’s book would point out just how some of the above cause and effects combine with one another to cause the complete collapse of certain societies.

Incidentally, Diamond’s book also mentioned something about Angkor Wat, which another pingster has posted in this post. Read and be enlightened on not just what environmental problems can do to the area we live in (and floods), but also what it means to our species as a whole!

In short, quit telling me about the ozone layer and the melting ice as if that’s the only environmental issue we have!

The Eye – Some facts

Post maybe controversial in nature. Do not link this post. Do not read further if the debate of Creationism vs. Evolution disturbs or offends you.

Excerpts from Darwin’s Black Box by Michael Behe:

When light first strike the retina a photon interacts with a molecule called 11-cis-retina, which re-arranges within picoseconds to trans-retina. (A picosecond is about the time it takes light to travel the breath of a single human hair.) The change in the shape of the retina molecule forces a change in the shape of the protein, rhodopsin, to which the retinal is tightly bound. The protein’s metamorphosis alters its behaviour. Now called metarhodopsin II, the protein sticks to another protein, called transducin. Before bumping into metarhodopsin II, transducin had tightly bound a small molecule called GDP. But when transducin interacts with metarhodopsin II, the GDP falls off, and a molecule called GTP binds to transducin

GTP-transducin-metarhodopsin II now binds to a protein called phosphodiesterase, located in the inner membrane of the cell. When attached to metarhodopsin II and its entourage, the phosphodiesterase acquires the chemical ability to “cut” a molecule called cGMP

When the amount of cGMP is reduced because of cleavage by phosphodiesterase, the ion channel closes, causing cellular concentration of positively charged ions to be reduced. This causes an imbalance of charge across the cell membrane that, finally, causes a current to be transmitted down the optical nerve to the brain. The result, when interpreted by the brain, is vision.

Michael Behe is, a biochemist more well known for his Creationist stand. He has written several books that against Evolution and one of them is Darwin’s Black Box.

Looking at the above, I can understand why he remained unconvinced by Evolution, which allegedly ‘explains loads of facts and is supported by mountains of evidence’. In fact, I would find it difficult to fault him for doubting that such precise interaction within the eye can be a result of mutation, one of the key tenets of Evolution.

Evolutionists and their ilk can ridicule or demolish Behe with mere words, but it makes one wonder why people cannot look beyond his Creationist stand but ridicule him for doing what scientists should be doing – testing a theory. Seems like what the pre-reformed Catholic Church did to Galileo, Evolutionists today are doing the same to these so-called ‘Creationists’. Is Evolution a scientific theory or a dogma which cannot be challenged?

Michael Behe should perhaps just give up and be a preacher, because God is spiritual and He is seen more clearly in the heart and the spirit than in science. And personally I do not believe that “Intelligent Design” should be taught in schools as a rival theory to Evolution. Matters of faith has nothing to do with science.

God, in His omni-potence, can definitely stand up for Himself without us mere mortals thinking we can do better.

My Favorite Bloggers

The above is the top 10 posts on ping.sg in the last 24 hours. As you can see, 3 posts about the Borg Queen (aka xiasuay) topped the lists. The news of her flamming 7 other bloggers has set Blogosphere ablazed. (I hate people setting fire to forests!)

Even one of the evening Chinese tabloids reported the news yesterday on the flame war between the Borg Queen and ex-Singapore Idol contestant Maia Lee. I have no intention to further report about who she flamed and her ongoing flame war with them, but let me make my stand clear – Maia! Not because she can sing well, pretty, had a tattoo of an eagle on her back, almost got married with Sylvester Sim etc… but because * music * She’s got the Boobs! without needing Adobe Photoshop.

The ongoing flame war has induced much negative energy into Blogosphere and rinaz suggested that instead of commenting further on the matter or join in to flame the Borg Queen, we do exactly the reverse and talk about the 7 blogs that we liked. Above which, I was also tagged by Wishbone to keep it going.

So here are the 7 blogs I liked:

  1. Merv Kwok – A guy who presents his experiences in his own special humorous way.
  2. Rude Singaporeans – Where you find specimens of ungracious Singaporeans out there.
  3. ‘Chinese Craps’ChillyCrap’s Blog in Chinese. There aren’t that many people around who expresses their thoughts seriously in Chinese. A rarity in Singapore.
  4. Mr Brown – Another humorous blogger whose satirical postings about current events in Singapore caused him his column on TODAY. You either aren’t Singaporean or you are a boot licking Tali-PAP lackey if you don’t read Mr Brown.
  5. The Keropok – For those who love photo blogs. The Keropok Man takes very nice pictures of Singapore and interesting things he sees.
  6. Cloudywind – Yet another photo blog. (Yes, I like to look at photographs and not the me-me-me blogs or those bloggers who attempts to be ‘controversial’ or ‘outrageous’.)
  7. Malique – Last but not least, Malique. A special blog in its own class, where a blogger expresses himself with style and substance.

I am supposed to tag 7 more people, but I don’t know enough people on ping.sg well enough to tag them. So forgive me, Wishbone.

PS: Everyone knows what a Borg is right? Someone like xiasuay would definitely love to be the Borg Queen so she can get the nice body of the actress acting as the Borg Queen. Or at the very least, that of a Borg called Seven-of-Nine. * LOL *

Tranquility in the City – Pearl’s Hill City Park

I had 18.5 days of leave and I decided to do something about that half a day by utilizing it today. After all, it’s a Monday, and since Monday usually sucks, it is best to get away from work.

And since it’s no point going home where I’ll laze away anyway, I told my colleague, when I applied for leave, that I will be going to Pearl’s Hil Cityl Park, where my old Primary School used to be.

A Short Introduction: The Outram Park Estate (now demolished), Chin Swee Road, and Pearl’s Hill Terrace marks the boundaries of the park, and on the hill top sits the Pearl’s Hill Service Reservoir, which contains the purified water supplied to the vicinity (or so I was told).

So, after knocking off at around 11:45 (because I started work at 7am today), I took the MRT to Outram Park MRT, and went over to SGH to change into a T-shirt. It was a really hot afternoon, and by the time I got halfway up the stairs up to the hill, I was already drenched in my own perspiration, and panting like mad. (It must be the damned weather because I refused to believe I am unfit!)

It’s been a long time since I came by this way, and I tried to remember the way as best as I can. Part of the reason why I find it hard to remember the place was that they have put up barricades to prevent people from falling over and rolling down the slope when during the days I was a kid there were none. (It goes to show that the older generation are made of sterner stuff, or at least are more careful and certainly didn’t place the responsibility of their own safety on others! Just can’t say the same of the whiny little brats today!)

I took about a 45 minutes walk around the park, and it brought back memories from the days when I was still a child. It’s some how, sort of sad at some parts… looking at them demolishing the old school building. (I think they are demolishing it!)

I would have stayed longer had I brought with me some water but as I was thirsty, I had to make my way down to look for some drinks to quench my thirst. And by now I had to admit I am unfit since my legs are sort of wobbling as I make my way down. (Damn… I really need to do some exercises * sigh *)

So, here are the pictures taken with the Nokia 7390. I know I am not a good photographer so stop complaining already!
