I posted that in tomorrow.sg too.
The majority of the products of the logging goes to China, their biggest customer. 1.3 billion people sure ain’t going to give a toss about the tiny red dot and its neighbours. Some of the logging companies are Malaysian too.
“Many of Indonesia’s forests have already been decimated and loggers are felling another 2 million hectares each year. Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry, which has limited capacity to police the country’s forests and prosecute violators, estimates that 75% of the logging is illegal. Much of the illegal timber is smuggled through neighbouring Malaysia, resulting in tax losses of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. About three-quarters of the timber goes to nearby Asian countries. The rest is sold in Europe and North America. ”

“Jakarta; Rampant smuggling of illegal timber from Indonesia to China is a billion dollar trade threatening the last remaining intact tropical forests in the Asia-Pacific region, the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) and Telapak revealed at a press conference today in Jakarta. The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) is an international campaigning organisation committed to investigating and exposing environmental crime.
17 February 2005: A new report released by EIA/Telapak, entitled “The Last Frontier”, exposes the international criminal syndicates behind the massive looting of merbau trees from Indonesia’s Papua Province. Merbau, a valuable hardwood used mainly for flooring, is being smuggled out of Papua at a rate of around 300 000 cubic metres of logs every month to feed China’s timber processing industry. China’s economic boom has led to it becoming the largest buyer of illegal timber in the world. ”

BRAVO! BRAVO!
You aren’t the only person who gets that, Merv. My eyes water, my throat hurts and I am also coughing way too often.
BTW, I was told the blasted Indon farmers probably can’t create a mess of this scale. It’s blasted logging companies man!! It’s high time the SG gover-min does its usual wonder – act like it’s doing something while at the same time makes loads of $$$.
How? Just tax freaking Indon agricultural and whatever exports that’s got something to do with trees. It definitely won’t stop the assh*les but then the gover-min can probably take some of that money and put into our Medisave.
the haze is doing wonders for my health. i haven’t had a good night’s sleep for ages and i’m coughing waayy too often.
