The recent victory of PacNet (or PI) over Xedo seems to have taken the Internet by storm, and I have heard many talk of people wanting to jump ship once their current contract expire.
Personally, I not only approve what these fellows intend to do, I will actually encourage them to do so! Because on a more personal – and selfish – level, I really don’t mind some of these downloaders go choke up PI’s bandwidth so that I can have smoother surfing on SingNet or Starhub. Hiak hiak hiak.
Anyway, from an unverified source, I was told that XYSing KYSing of Xedo (and his fellow director), were also directors of a defunct company called Games Mart. (And my own searches on ACRA confirmed this. ACRA reports found here: Odex | Games Mart)
This source informed me that back around 1999, Games Mart Pte Ltd was caught for counterfeit goods (primarily Sony Playstation stuff), and 2 of their directors and an employee were subsequently charged.
These two directors – names omitted as unverified – were found guilty and sentenced to 15 months of jail, along with an employee named Jason, who was sentenced to 10 months. (I have so far failed to verify this and I am not sure if any news on this court case can be found on the Internet to support these unverified claims. It does not seem likely I could get my hands on the court reports like these cases of people getting sued by the Public Prosecutor here and here.)
Personally, I would really like some solid verification of the Games Mart case, and I would appreciate anyone who would point me in the direction of a reputable source of such information. I am personally quite upset with the fact that some people had actually told me that they wouldn’t take blogs and forum comments into serious considerations, but would take note of whatever single-page piece of shit Xedo had currently put up on their site. If that is a testimony of just what low esteem Blogosphere is held by people, then there is really no point for any attempt at Blog journalism, because those people with serious content are discredited in one broad stroke!
Anyway, what I did find in Google, was a brief mention in the comment section of a blog by someone of the moniker of Beowulf that some anime released by Xedo were actually released previously under Games Mart.
While I am not attempting to imply anything here, but it appears that the bad quality of Xedo products has gone a long way back.
And though this really does not justify the very act of downloading anime ‘illegally’, it does explain why some of the people are downloading fan-subs and not buying Xedo products in spite of their attempts at lowering prices.
Food for thought: Is it not necessary to consider these facts, when the argument that downloading is hurting sales is presented in court by Xedo? After all, it appears that there is a long history of people who did want to get their copies legally not getting what their money’s worth.
Addendum:
Those two directors who got 15 months are NOT KYSing or Peter G.
The names are removed from the blog post for 2 reasons – 1. Yellow Ribbon – don’t rub salt to an old wound of people who might now be living a meaningful life; and 2. No verification that they are indeed the ones who end up in jail.
Please DO NOT speculate or use this post as justification to name KY and his fellow director as those two who ended up in jail. I do not wish to be hauled up in court for libel or defamation.
Yes. according compaines act, person who have crime records r not allow to register theirself as director in ACRA. and it is totally untrue. I work in ACRA.

Odex affiliate raided for counterfeiting 8 years ago
A ONE-TIME firm started by the men behind Odex, the company at the centre of a crackdown on illegal downloading of anime, was itself raided by police for copyright infringement.
The firm – Games Mart – was set up by Odex director Peter Go in 1994 to sell video game consoles, games and accessories.
Yah, Censorship sticker only means that they have censored or vetted the content and it is not an indication of legality…
In the past, you can send in a bootleg copy for censorship and get it approved if you pay S$10 I think…
concerned: you might be right there. I seem to recall TS (or one of those other VCD shops) getting hell over copyright for some VCDs they sold. I do remember asking some friends how on earth that can be possible when they have a censorship board sticker on it.
Censorship board is just responsible for certifying that the content of the discs are not against SG laws and policies. I dun think they screen for actual licensing etc. so for all u know copies of dramas, animes etc u bought last time w the green sticker might actually be possible bootlegs that did not seek permission first with the copyright owners.
xedodefense: I did not say they are linked to the Games Mart case of the counterfeit accessories. However, the 2 companies do have common shareholders (if not directors). Check the ACRA pdfs.
looking for dex: I think it should have been the point of the lawyers of the ISPs to indicate that bad sales may not necessarily be a case of downloading but a case of bad quality and even packaging. However, I am curious why no one has taken those products to CASE to make a point yet.
concerned: I don’t know how those CDs can be bootlegged ones if they have a censorship sticker or whatever. However, I do believe that the originals themselves may not be of top quality and coupled with sub-par CD production methods and sub-titles, would have given you that impression.
One of our forum members have checked out the alleged link and found no evidence linking current Odex directors to Games Mart.
It’s also been pointed out that if anybody has been convicted for something related to corporate governance, they would not have been allowed to become directors again.
So I guess it’s just an unfounded rumour.
After this saga started, I went around and looked at their discs. It is like their quality is worst than those days (very very long time ago) when pirated stuff was all over the place. There is this CD shop called something STATION, bundling three packs with special discounts. There are collecting dust. Like DVD movies collectors, that kind of package quality is totally unacceptable. Looked like the in-house design guy did not have enough Photoshop skills to create the cover properly. You can tell the artifacts from the print.
Ok those with licensed by SUNRISE might be the real stuff. I have Gundam F91, Gundam Endless Waltz and Gundam Wing “Memory Box”, only problem now cannot verify the place of purchase cos i dun have the receipt. SS used to be at those IT fairs too. I have SS name card under the Games Mart Pte Ltd logo. Yes its those pillars thingy.
I also have the VISION OF ESCAFLOWNE vcd box set from Games Mart in pristine condition. The price tag is still present ($62.90, purchased at SEMBAWANG). The Games Mart logo at the back of the box resembles an ancient Greek building. Are the sources of these VCDs legit? The box says Licensed by SUNRISE to Games Mart. Says the same thing on the VCDs too.
Hi, I saw a link to your site from hardwarezone. Yes, I’m the same guy who posted on the Rivua blog. Let’s just saw that my experience with Games Mart was not very nice…
Anyway, Games Mart used to sell anime and pirated PS games as well. They had an outlet in Orchard Popular MRT selling pirated PS games. I think that was their first outlet before they opened a subsequent one in JEC. I still have in my possession, a Vision of Escaflowne VCD set by released by them with their logo. Would gladly take a photo of it but unfortunately, I don’t have a digital cam with me currently.
And the address? Games Mart(s) PTE LTD. 10 Anson Road #22-11 International Plaza,
S(079903) FAX (65)2226119
concerned – I left you an email.
Hi, where did you get your source from? I am interested in also finding out more stuff about games mart cos i bought stuff from them last time which had censorship stickers but looked “bootleg-gy”…
Calm down. It will still take some time before people start taking article written on blogs seriously.
