xedO – || – Odex

If you see a nine-year-old kid being kicked around on the streets, no matter that this nine-year-old is no saint, you’d rush to his defense for sure, hardly thinking about yourself. – Excerpts from ‘Kicking kids for profit?’.

I agree, absolutely. And I suppose, no company or person has gotten more hated in such a short period, with perhaps the exception of a particular Wee Shit Min. In fact, what Odex did must have been quite irritating when it actually got a mention on this Stooge Times article. (Do I sense a Durai in the making?)

Even when I went to watch Bourne Ultimatum yesterday, someone among the audience actually said, “Fxxk Odex!” On the Internet, it has spawned several anti-Odex movements, one of them being the ‘Recycle your Odex CDs’ movement.

I must say, “Freaking ‘well done’, Odex!”

Personally, I am no anime fan. When I heard references about anime downloaders being sued, my first impression was – Yet another ‘Kill Chicken Scare Monkey’ (杀鸡儆猴) Operation, and these are probably heavy downloaders who get what is deserved. In fact, I was expecting Odex to actually kick those who are not only heavy downloaders, but also stupid enough to re-distribute their downloaded stuff to everyone else! And if it was that, I would have thought they deserved whatever coming for them.

Then I read references that even those with financial difficulties are expected to settle with Odex. While I ain’t saying that when you are poor, you are allowed to steal, I would at least expect them to be given a warning instead. Odex, however, showed no compassion at all. From then on, I told myself I will NEVER buy anything carried by Odex.

Then I read on blogosphere that even a 9 year-old kid was ‘odexed’ (the term now used to indicate people who received the warning letter from Odex) and his parents were forced to pay several thousands in settlement. I originally took it with a pinch of salt, until I read it in the CNET article.

And that’s when I started paying attention to links received from angered friends, and pings of blog postings on ping.sg talking about this. I begin to read about the poor quality of Odex products and to my surprise, there’s even a Wiki entry on this. A lot of my friends were adamant that this isn’t all made up by angered fans, and a fellow blogger has even told me that I can look at how bad the quality is just watching those showed on TV. It begs the question if sales is bad because of downloading, or just simply the products are of shoddy quality, or that they are outdated.

I must salute the Internet community standing as one in this. I am surprised how fast dirty linen is brought to light. Such as this forum posting when he gloated about suing people:

But the worse of it all, is clause 6 in the settlement document. It reads:

Summary: ‘I hereby bend over so you can screw my ass again when you bway song’.

With this, the last shred of support I had for the Odex lawsuits vaporised faster than an atomic bomb can vaporise a city after I consider the people who got ‘odexed’ – people who are downloading not for profit, but for personal consumption. Will Stephen Sing also sue those who taped Odex distributed anime off the TV for future consumption?

Stephen Sing is definitely not helping in getting the understanding from the anime community, or even a layman like me. One could hardly in clear conscience think of this as a company doing it’s best to defend its interest. Stephen Sing (and Odex) is giving me an impression that I won’t want to talk about in public domain. After all, downloaders are sued, people threatening him are sued, and I am not surprised I might get sued for libel if I said the wrong things here.

Anyway, many people have also given their take on this, and some have advised what you can do to when you get ‘odexed’. One of the better suggestions is here.

By the way, I know everyone is angry. But threats like beating him up, raping his grandmother or burning his office / home to the ground on forums is no use. If Odex wanna be legalistic, so can we. Since the quality of their CDs is known to be bad, it simply means there are loads of legal evidence out there you as consumers can take it up to CASE against Odex. And that is only the first step. The next step would perhaps be letting the Japanese know just how badly Odex is screwing all the local anime fans, so they remove its right to distribute.

There is no need to resort to threats and get yourself into trouble. In fact, there is more joy in destroying Stephen Sing’s means to make more money. And taking away the distributorship from him is better than skinning him alive.

Movies: The Bourne Ultimatum

Caught the third installment of the Bourne series at GV Plaza yesterday, and I must say I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the previous two. It has always been my opinion that this should have been what James Bond movies should have been and the latest Bond movie by Daniel Craig was probably the only one that came the closest. (Doesn’t matter no one liked him as Bond.)

There was a minor disturbance before the movie started. After the Ratatouille ‘Protect IP’ clip was shown, someone in the crowd muttered ‘Fxxk Odex’. Since I was only a few seats away from whoever that was, I replied ‘I agree’ and there was some muffled laughter from some audiences in the vicinity. Stephen Sing and Odex have very successfully made themselves the most hated in Singapore. (More on Odex in a coming post!)

Anyway, the story is about Jason Bourne’s continued attempt to uncover his identity. It begins with a leak about a certain Black Op in the CIA, which Jason is a part of. The events that transpired ultimately attracted the attention of Jason Bourne.

The CIA attempted to clean up the leak – which simply means elimination of the people involved. Jason once again got dragged into the ongoing operations, though he would want to have nothing to do with his former agency. As usual, elements in the CIA also attempted to eliminate Jason because they wouldn’t like certain things to see the light of day, as it would mean their own ruin.

In the course of the story, one would be taken to several cities in Europe: Moscow, Turin, London and Madrid, and to Tangiers in Morocco, then back to New York. There will be the usual car chases and hand to hand fighting of course. That’s not mentioning that the women in the movie are not just eye-candy or the often damsel in distress in James Bond movies!

So did Jason ultimately manage to find out who he really was and how he end up being some kind of professional assassin? And did the bad people get what they deserved? Watch the show to find out!

And I hope they make a movie on the Brotherhood of the Rose soon!

127.0.0.1     xiaxue.blogspot.com

I was reading Publiceducator’s post on his blog and out of fun I commented that if we don’t like to read someone, we can always put that person’s blog address into our host file in c:windowssystem32driversetc.

For e.g., if you don’t like this particular blog, you can just put the following entry into the host file:

127.0.0.1     xiaxue.blogspot.com

This will work as long as your browser does not use a proxy server for access. However, you can also use a .pac file as a configuration script. All you need to do is open notepad, and fill in the following text and then save the file with a .pac extension in c:. (For e.g. fxxkupblogs.pac)

function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
{if (shExpMatch (host, “xiaxue.blogspot.com”)) return “127.0.0.1:8080;”;
return “DIRECT;”
}

After which, you should have the browser use this file to determine what proxy to use. For e.g. in Firefox, you choose Automatic proxy configuration File URL and enter this: file:///c:/fxxkupblogs.pac.

And you are done. Even if by accident you clicked on a link pointing to that abominable site, you will NEVER end up there.

PS: Let me know if the code doesn’t work. I had a whole lot of other things in mine, and I cut and pasted out this part as an example so I might have carelessly removed some other parts I shouldn’t have removed.

Inconvenient Truth

While talking to a friend the other day about CO2 emissions and Global Warming, my friend suddenly threw me an unexpected question:

“How much money do you have riding on the ‘alternate energies’ industry?”

I was taken aback by the question and he further clarified, “It is my considered opinion, that Al Gore’s ‘Inconvenient Truth’ may have taken many people for a ride and he may have a lot of money riding on all these ‘Alternate Energies’ industries. I don’t think Al Gore really gives a damn about the environment considering all the bad press he gets about the energy he uses in his home. That’s not mentioning that the Bush family has strong ties with the petroleum industry and this may just be Al Gore’s way of getting back at Bush for ‘stealing’ the presidency from him in 2000.”

Quite a wild conspiracy theory, but not without merits. And on further thinking, it reminded me of a discussion on the ping.sg shoutbox with 2 other pingsters – arzhou and miccheng. Mic pointed out, that global warming may not just be due to just increase output in CO2 – or even methane – emissions, and he emphasized that he is all for reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases for the very purpose of having a less polluted atmosphere and not for the sake of ‘containing Global Warming’.

Anyway, there have been documentaries refuting that claim and I have also read articles indicating that this might also have something to do with an increase output of energy from our star – Sol (more commonly known as the Sun).

Still, a lot of people further argued that the messed up weather patterns, the stronger hurricanes and typhoons, the melting of ice caps, and the increased in rainfall and more severe flooding is a testimony of ‘global warming’.

Well, it maybe true, but more severe storms would happen as long as there is an increase in heat energy trapped in the oceans and the atmosphere. Being a layman, it is my opinion that more severe storms is a way for the planet to regulate the temperature, and to release the excess energy that is introduced.

Furthermore, more severe flooding has more to do with drainage (or the lack of it), and the elevation of the land than with rain. Take for e.g. New Orleans. Many were quick to point to the failure of the dykes as the main reason. However it was also pointed out that New Orleans is sinking (and Bangkok and Venice too!) and the dykes themselves were to be blamed for this. One of the reasons, if I got it correctly, is that the dykes removed the ability of the Mississippi River to dump fresh soil on its banks.

Now, let us look further than just the result of air pollution causing Global Warming to the cause and effect of some of the other environmental problems that we have, all as a result of our abuse and / or unsustainable use of the planet’s resources.

  1. Bad water management #1 (Overuse of underground water) -> Depleted water table and land sinkage.
  2. Bad water management #2 (Indiscriminate irrigation on acidic land) -> Displacement of salts into arable land making them barren.
  3. Bad water management #3 (Dumping of unprocessed industrial waste / sewage into rivers / lakes) -> Death of marine organisms and a possible collapse of the river / lake eco-system.
  4. Bad water management #4 (Bad Drainage) -> When a worse than normal storm hits you, you are going to be swimming.
  5. Deforestation and the loss of grassland -> Erosion of arable land.
  6. The loss of marshland / swamp -> Removes the one obstacle preventing wter erosion of land.
  7. Invasion of foreign species -> Destruction of local fauna and flora as a result of competition from species that indigenous species have no defense against.
  8. Excessive use of fertilisers -> Fungal blooms that destroys marine eco-systems and fresh water sources.
  9. Excessive use of insecticides -> Consumption of dead poisoned insects harming other creatures.
  10. Excessive amount of waste -> Non-biodegradables like plastics choking up the landscape.

And the above is an incomplete list because that’s a list of things I can remember from reading Jared Diamond’s Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed.

I do suggest you read that book for a better understanding of the herculean tasks in dealing with our environmental problems and not be too carried away by Al Gore and all those stars from Hollywood. And I am not suggesting you ignore their message anyway, but just reminding you that Global Warming isn’t the one and only environmental problem we have, and there are other problems that exist which could make Global Warming just that much worse than it already is. In fact, the case studies in Diamond’s book would point out just how some of the above cause and effects combine with one another to cause the complete collapse of certain societies.

Incidentally, Diamond’s book also mentioned something about Angkor Wat, which another pingster has posted in this post. Read and be enlightened on not just what environmental problems can do to the area we live in (and floods), but also what it means to our species as a whole!

In short, quit telling me about the ozone layer and the melting ice as if that’s the only environmental issue we have!

V-J Day

Today is V-J [Victory over Japan] or V-P [Victory in the Pacific] day.

62 years ago, At 12pm Japan Standard Time in 1945, Emperor Hirohito’s announced Japan’s acceptance of the terms of the Potsdam Declaration, and it was broadcast to the Japanese people over the radio. This is the first time the Japanese people heard the voice of their God-Emperor.

Japan was the last Axis power to surrender and with its surrender, World War II – a savage, vicious and devastating war, officially comes to an end. It signals the end of Colonialism, the defeat of Militarism and the triumph of the free world against Fascism.

A new era is ushered in Asia and within the next 20 years, countries in South East Asia all come to gain their independence from their former colonial powers, either through open rebellion or by peaceful negotiations.

Below is a list of South and South-East Asian countries which gain independence since the end of World War II

  1. Indonesia – From Holland: Aug 17, 1945
  2. Vietnam – From France: Sep 2, 1945
  3. Philippines – From US: Jul 4, 1946
  4. India – From UK: Aug 15, 1947
  5. Myanmar – From UK: Jan 4, 1948
  6. Sri Lanka – From UK: Feb 4, 1948
  7. Laos – From France: 19 Jul 1949
  8. Cambodia – From France: Nov 9, 1953
  9. Malaysia – From UK: Aug 31, 1957
  10. Singapore – Self rule from UK: Jun 3, 1959 / Independece from Malaysia Aug 9, 1965
  11. Brunei – From UK: Jan 1, 1984

The list does not include Bengladesh and Pakistan as they were split from India as a result of a war.
